Artistic Director and Orchestra Conductor
Music is a gift that requires constant nurturing—and people to share it with. It’s my hope that those sharing this musical journey with me experience the same joy I do. - Troy Raper
Troy Raper is a Colorado native and lifelong music educator who began teaching in 1988 and served in public education for 31 years before retiring in 2021. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education with honors from the University of Northern Colorado and a master’s degree in education from Lesley University with an emphasis in educational technology.
Troy was the orchestra and strings teacher at Palisade High School and Mt. Garfield Middle School, where his ensembles regularly earned superior ratings at festivals from Palisade to Disneyland. Many of his former students have gone on to become professional musicians and educators nationwide.
Though retired from the classroom, Troy continues to teach private bass lessons and remains an active advocate for music education. He served for a decade on the Colorado All State Orchestra Governing Board and has held leadership roles with the Colorado chapters of the American String Teachers Association and Music Educators Association.
He currently serves as production manager and librarian for the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra.
Troy is also an accomplished performer, serving as principal bassist for the Grand Junction Symphony and appearing with orchestras across Colorado and the region, including Greeley, Fort Collins, Durango, and the Crested Butte Music Festival. He performs regularly in jazz ensembles, recording studios, and as a soloist.
Now in his third season as artistic director and conductor of the Valley Symphony Orchestra in Montrose, Troy is passionate about making music accessible to all. He brings his energy and vision to this all-volunteer ensemble, helping shape its future with a strong sense of community and collaboration.
Outside of music, Troy enjoys life with his wife Lori—an accomplished artist and educator—and their daughters, Mandolyn and Melody, both pursuing arts careers. He also enjoys arranging music for strings, riding motorcycles, video games, and remodeling projects.
