VSA Soprano Kathy Foglesong was born and raised in Bay City, MI, and started singing at 11 years old. “We lived a block away from our Catholic Church in Bay City, MI. I would show up in the choir loft for early Mass during the week and sing the Latin Mass—we sang Gregorian chant back then. The organist encouraged me, and soon I was singing at weddings and funerals.” Kathy also sang in her high school chorus. Although she never had formal voice lessons, she did take piano lessons for three years, “Just long enough to play for my own enjoyment and give me the ability to plunk out notes to learn my chorus music.”

After marrying husband, Hank, they lived in Midland, MI, Elizabethtown, KY, and moved to Montrose when Hank retired in 1996. She sang with the Sweet Adelines in Midland for about 10 years. That ended when the family moved to Kentucky for a job transfer. “I didn't sing in an organized group again until we moved to Montrose when I joined our church choir. At Hank’s urging, I tried out for the VSA Chorus in 2002 and have been singing with them ever since.”

She was a stay-at-home mom of two (boy and a girl) and went back to college when her youngest was in her teens. Kathy graduated in 1990 and worked for a couple of tax seasons at H&R Block in Michigan and then joined the AARP Tax Aide program. “After moving to Montrose, I continued volunteering with the Tax Aide program for about 12 years.”

“While we lived in Kentucky we learned how to square dance. When we moved to Montrose we took lessons again and joined the local square dance club for several years.” She also enjoys hiking, needlework, reading, dancing, water exercise classes at the recreation center, coffee with friends, making greeting cards with photographs that she has taken, bridge, playing Words with Friends online, and spending time with family and friends.

The most memorable concert she’s performed in was Mozart's Requiem. “I am part of the VSA because I truly love to sing as a member of a chorus. I really enjoy the friendships that I have developed with other chorus members. I find it very rewarding to be a part of a group that works together to create beautiful music for our own enjoyment and for the enjoyment of our audience.”

Hank served as a VSA board member from 1999 to 2002. “We both feel it important to financially support the VSA in their mission to provide quality classical music on the Western Slope.”
