Brenda has been singing with the VSA chorus since its beginning and has performed under all eight directors.
Except for brief hiatuses she has been in some sort of singing group since junior high: glee club, Meistersingers in high school, Chancel Singers in college choral, church choir, and many small groups. Her first solo was in 5th grade, a part of “Getting to Know You” from “The King of Siam.”
Born in Virginia to a military family (dad was a Marine), her clan moved often, ultimately settling in Southern California, where Brenda graduated high school and attended Los Angeles Baptist College in Newhall. After marriage, she lived in Washington State for 14 years, but when she realized she needed sun, “We moved here. I often say, ‘I'm solar powered.’"
“I love the VSA Chorus because I get to sing a wide variety of music and practice to learn it well.” All directors teach differently, “so we always learn something new.” She also “likes spending two hours a week with like-minded people who all love music.”
Brenda joined the VSA board in 2018 “to be a voice for the chorus” and learned how to create the behind-the-scenes online ticket sales campaigns for each of the concerts.
She home-schooled her four children and is now a substitute schoolteacher. She also combines two things she loves by teaching music to the children at her church. She enjoys her grandchildren as often as she can and likes crafting and baking. As a coach for “Girls on the Run,” a non-profit “dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams,” she gets to help girls while staying in shape.
Brenda loves classic rock and loves to dance. “My late husband was a bass player in a rock band which was so much fun. I also love shopping at thrift shops with my daughter. We find fun stuff!”
